Painting of the Month

Title: Patch of sky above the river

Patch of sky on the Marne. To explore again the river banks, its lightning and perspectives, I have engaged myself in a two-pronged approach : painting with a knife and large canvas. This painting, as the previous one (see my Archives page) is a 60 F (F for figure) : it means that its dimensions are 130 x 97 cm. I have chosen this large frame for two main reasons. First because the energy that is being developped while using the knife suits very well the wide space. Always under constraints, but with large spaces of freedom. Second because the way you look into the painting is made easier by the dimension itself. With or without a clear perspective, the feeling of being straight into the landscape is strenghtened by the canvas’s extent.

The knife/wide space effect is twofold : the view of the painting from the distance gives the general mood, shows the contrasts, indicate the structuring shapes : the figurative work is still there, but the impressionist overview prevails, the drawn details vanish. The closer look reveals the details, the colours mixed by the particular work of the knife : oil matter applied on different kinds of underground layers (wet or dry) leaves behind, like a trail, harmonies of colours, small shapes that put together will build the general tone.
