Title: River
Why the river ? I do not paint this particular one, the Marne, but the idea of a river in general. To catch it is to relate two phenomenons : on one side the static frame of the landscape (the river flows in its bed, between the banks with their slow evolution, like if they were here forever and the same), on the other side the motion of water and the current. To this I will ad the playing of the light in the trees, with their long reflection onto the water surface. Between those movement and stillness lies a malicious time, I should write times. The leaf fallen in the current, hardly more rapidly that the pedestrian’s step ; the slow motion of shades ; the variation of colours in the leaves with the seasons ; the very long process of lanscape change with human activities. This is through these subtile waves of time that life speaks to me. Of course, it’s impossible to tell the movement on my canvas. But I try, with the different kinds of layers, fog effects and transparency, to give shape to the passing of time.
Holding time : impossible. At least, with my painting, I try, very humble, to get into the river current. A current that will bring me to the end, but that will help me build, through my choices and the people I meet, my destiny.
