Storm in a skull
This painting was carried out from February to May 2006. It is a square oil on canvas (90 cm x 90 cm). The work took so long because the project, and myself, went through different phases. First, a sketch was made with raw Sienna and burnt Sienna thinned down with Therebenthine. Three circles appeared, summing up a kind of a time-space feature, with movements imbricated like a clock mecanism. Light colors were then applied to make the structure more solid : the painting made me think of the experimentations of the italian painter Balla and his futurist friends. After a complete drying, my mood changed and I darkened the painting with blue hues and “pine green” directly coming out of the tube. The painting became sad and boring, and I left it against the wall for two months.
In May, under the first real sunbeams and the sensual red colors appeared onto the cherish tree, the final version of the painting popped out in few hours. Different kinds of yellow, red and Titanium white where applied with a palette knife : thick layers in some places, and always being anxious to vary the pressure on the canvas. In this way, opacity and transparency were combined. The initial gearing was still rotating, but the cinetic of the knife and the deep sensations of the colors prevailed.
I am calm now, but excitment and doubt are still there, underneath the coated skin. Storm in a skull.
