Windows Juillet 2006

This painting is part of a series intitled “windows”, that I have started in 2004. At the beginning of the series, the light came forward through a network of intertwined dark strips. Two year later, the pattern is more sophisticated, because I realized that to propose a window on an canvas was like bringing the artist and his public beyond the familiar representation of this structure. In the space of the painting, the windows are here to offer other frames that will open to other spaces.

A painting in itself is already the frame of a window. It suggests the existence of a wider world, accessible through a simple piece of canvas, leaving the thoughts free rein to rebuild the world around without actually seing it. The closer we stand in front of the window, the wider the horizon unfolds until it reaches the point where it becomes impossible to embrace it with a sole glance. And as we get closer to the painting, the word we see begins to shrink and to enlarge in the same time. What a paradox...

The windows shown in this painting - itself a larger window - are in fact not pictures of the outside world, but of the inner space of the painting. In this case, the painting around it is only the outside wall of it all. Then where would be the outside world ? No doubt, in your own eyes.
