Title: Distance
Space is at the heart of a painting’s creation. In the metrics of this project lie the distances. On one hand, the space that separates the objects from one another, on the other hand the space between the canvas and your eyes. In this view of Pont-Neuf, Paris, distance is everywhere, strengthened by the rules of perspective and by the story of the characters. The perspective lines, shaping a wide triangle, show the place where the glance will vanished. On these lines, recognisable shapes are brought at different scales to guide your eyes in the perception of distance : people with faces on the front, shapes with their shadow in the distance on the opposite bank, witnesses of a human presence. For the couple, distance is also playing its role : proximity between the man and the woman, loneliness speak for their complicity, while the remoteness of the shapes around will lead to forget the scenery despite its omnious presence. For them both, distance has disappeared. The parapet where they stand won’t go further – refuses to share the horizon. An horizon that is still hidden by the trees, whose shadow does not dare to disturb the couple. There is no vanishing point in sight, because only the moment is important. The Seine river does not flow, it is.
For you who look at the painting, distance is also involved in the story of your meeting. Too close, the faces of the people will not be : just little stains of colours. No expression but in the situation itself, the instant’s components. Too far, the effects and the prize of the colours will be destroyed, and only the large shapes will survive, impoverishing the picture. Between the two, hard choice, your eyes will find the proper distance, where the understanding of the painting, the pleasure ot the colours, the saying of the painter, and above all the emotion he has tried to share, will finally meet.
